At GroanDeck, we respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal information. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your data when you use our service.

What Information We Collect

Usage Data

  • A randomly generated viewer ID, stored in a cookie on your first visit
  • Joke reactions, daily streak progress, and daily challenge answers, stored under your viewer ID
  • Usage events, such as viewing or sharing a joke or opening its explanation. These are not linked to your viewer ID or your account.
  • A one-way hash of your IP address and your viewer ID, if you open a joke link that someone else shared. We store the hash, not the address, so each visitor is credited to the person who shared the link only once.

If you sign in, everything stored under your viewer ID is linked to your account.

Account Information (Optional)

  • Your Google account name, email address, and profile photo when you sign in
  • Jokes you save as favorites
  • The sign-in tokens Google sends us when you sign in. We store them with your account but don't use them to access your Google account.

Information You Send Us

  • Your email address if you subscribe to the Daily Groan email
  • Your email address and message if you email us
  • A contact email address if we issue you an API key

Analytics

We use Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights to measure page views and page speed. They do not use cookies. Vercel counts visitors with an anonymized hash of the request that resets every day.

How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information to:

  • Track daily streaks and daily challenge results
  • Count and display joke reactions and favorites
  • Credit people who share jokes on their Groan Counter
  • Send the Daily Groan email to subscribers who confirmed their address
  • Reply to emails you send us
  • Analyze joke popularity to improve our content curation
  • Monitor site performance and fix technical issues
  • Prevent abuse. We briefly check IP addresses to rate-limit requests; these checks are not stored.

We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Cookies and Local Storage

We use essential cookies to provide core functionality:

  • Viewer ID cookie: Random identifier for streaks, reactions, and the daily challenge. If you sign in, it is linked to your account.
  • Sign-in cookies: Keep you signed in after you sign in with Google

We also save a few settings, such as your theme and which prompts you dismissed, in your browser's storage. This stays on your device and is not sent to us.

GroanDeck does not show ads and does not use advertising or tracking cookies. For more details, see our cookie policy.

Third-Party Services

We use trusted third-party services to operate GroanDeck:

  • Google: Sign-in, to save favorites and keep your Groan Counter across devices
  • Neon PostgreSQL: Database hosting for jokes and user data
  • Vercel: Website hosting, Web Analytics, and Speed Insights
  • Resend: Sends confirmation and Daily Groan emails

These services have their own privacy policies and may collect additional data according to their terms.

Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as necessary to provide our services:

  • Usage data: Retained for analytics and to keep features like streaks working. We do not currently delete it automatically.
  • Account information: Retained until you ask us to delete your account
  • Newsletter email: Retained while you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep your address marked as unsubscribed so we don't email you again. Ask us if you want it removed completely.
  • Messages you send us: Retained so we can follow up
  • Jokes submitted before we stopped accepting submissions: Retained as part of our content library

Children's Privacy

GroanDeck contains family-friendly content suitable for all ages, but our service is not specifically directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate information
  • Request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Unsubscribe from the Daily Groan using the link in any email
  • Clear the viewer ID cookie in your browser at any time (this resets your streak)

Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. However, no internet transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the updated policy on this page with a new "last updated" date.
